UN Secretary General condemns attack on Sri Lankan Peacekeeping Forces in Mali - Hiru News - Srilanka's Number One News Portal, Most visited website in Sri Lanka

UN Secretary-General António Guterres strongly condemned the improvised explosive device attack against UN Peacekeeping Forces in Mali where 2 peacekeepers from Sri Lanka were killed.

In a statement the Secretary-General expressed his deep condolences to the Government of Sri Lanka and the families of the victims and wished a speedy recovery to those injured.

The Secretary-General recalled that attacks targeting United Nations peacekeepers may constitute war crimes under international law.

He called on the Malian authorities to spare no effort in identifying the perpetrators of this attack, so that they can be brought to justice as swiftly as possible.

The members of the UN Security Council also condemned the attack in the strongest terms.

The members of the Security Council reaffirmed that terrorism in all its forms should be rejected.

Meanwhile, the Sri Lanka Army says that they have taken steps to bring down the remains of the Sri Lankan Army Captain and trooper killed in the attack in the general area of Douentza in Mali, yesterday.

The duo who lost their lives were Captain H W Jayawickrama from Polonnaruwa and Corporal S S Wijekumara from Kurunegala.
